Toward Our 100 Years

In 1915, in a rented hall at 19th and Ashland, ten people met to pray, learn and sing. From this nucleus emerged the Heights Church of Christ. A gift from Heights resident E.F. Woodward in 1924 enabled the growing congregation to commission Albert Finn, then Houston’s leading architect, for their new church.

Known for works including the San Jacinto Monument, Finn created a facility with distinctive windows, custom pews, and beautiful woodwork throughout. Heights Church of Christ meets in that historic structure to this very day.

Church History

The dynamism of the Heights Church helped establish fifteen congregations around Houston, which in turn gave rise to more than 100 area congregations. The congregation’s growth mirrored that of the Heights itself: the 700-seat meeting hall was filled to capacity in the postwar years, but membership declined as families moved out to the suburbs.

The congregation is now in a season of growth and newness. In 2016 we established a DBA (doing business as) The Church at 1548 Heights, and new ministries and leaders are undertaking a prayerful and purposeful effort to restore the building and revitalize our ministry and mission in the Heights.
